Core Skills & Story Writing Course

The Core Skills & Story Writing Course helps children develop the language, skills and structure needed to become confident and effective writers.
Across the course, students will learn how strong stories are built, exploring how authors develop ideas, create characters and structure engaging narratives. Through carefully guided activities and creative challenges, children will strengthen their vocabulary, develop clear sentence construction and learn how to organise their ideas into well-structured writing.
The course focuses on developing the core foundations of creative writing — helping students express their ideas clearly, write with greater confidence and understand how stories are structured.
Suitable for Year 4–6 pupils, this course also provides valuable preparation for students who may be taking the 11+ entrance examinations, where strong written expression and clear storytelling are important.
The course forms a great foundation for Rocketology’s Creative Writing Workshops, supporting children as they develop both the technical skills and creative confidence needed for more advanced and genre-related writing.
Number of Children
OVERVIEW
The Core Skills & Story Writing Course focuses on developing three key areas of writing:
Language
Students strengthen vocabulary, descriptive language and sentence variety, helping them express ideas clearly and creatively.
Skills
Children practise planning, drafting and refining their writing, developing confidence in organising their ideas and communicating effectively.
Structure
Students learn how stories are built, exploring narrative structure, character development and how to create engaging openings, middles and endings.
Across the course, students will:
• develop vocabulary and descriptive language
• practise building varied and accurate sentences
• learn how to plan and structure a story
• explore character and setting development
• understand how stories progress from beginning to resolution
• build confidence expressing ideas through writing
Lessons balance creative exploration with structured skill development, helping students understand how strong writing is created.
